Recently the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE announced a NATO Gallup that enraged both supporters of democracy and opponents of NATO. It also raised criticism in the media for the way it was conducted. In this inquiry, the majority of Finns had said no to NATO, but then they were asked whether they would support the countries leaders in case they decide to join it, and most had said yes. The result was broadcast as, The Majority of Finns would support political leaders if they decided to join NATO.

The editor of a women's rights magazine has been accused of publishing anti-Islamic articles and faces a 10-15 year prison sentence. Write the U.S. State Department and urge them to take action on behalf of women's rights and freedom of speech in Afghanistan, urges the Feminist Majority Foundation.

Africa's biggest names in music came together recently for an unprecedented, 15-hour show to rally Africans in the fight against poverty. Viewers will be called on to send text messages for trade justice during the event, which will be televised in 11 countries this weekend.

After ten years supporting independent media in the country, and ten minutes of deliberation by Tashkent's city court, Internews has been forced to close up shop. Following a maelstrom of popular uprisings in the region, Uzbek authorities have cracked-down on non-governmental organizations over the past 18 months.

The research group of the Press Council, established with the assistance of the UNESCO, declared the establishment of a New System of Ethical Journalism in Serbia. The Declaration was presented at the regular monthly press-conference held at the Media Centre Belgrade.

The inaugural Global Forum for Media Development addressed the issues facing media professionals and highlighted the role independent media plays in political and economic development. This year's event, in Amman, Jordan, drew over six hundred journalists and media experts from nearly 100 countries.

The media is in our face everywhere newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and the internet. If we are not reading, we are listening, watching and taking it all in. The pressure on the media is therefore enormous, to constantly bring out reports and articles in bite sizes that can be easily enjoyed and digested by an ever-hungry and ever-impatient public.
