Could Telesur be Latin America's al-Jazeera? The continent-wide TV station launched Sunday, offering viewers a different perspective from the U.S.- and Europe-based corporate stations that currently dominate the airwaves. But, apparently afraid to lose the hearts and minds of another region, U.S. lawmakers have already reacted, authorizing $9 million for Washington to create its own competing station.

For years, the environmental NGOs (ENGOs) have felt the need for a publication of their own that would enforce and stabilise the network of the environmental movement in Albania. Also, it could prove a powerful agent in the process of establishment of a strong public environmental opinion in the environmental development policies. Therefore, the publication of The Environment Today newspaper started in 2002. The paper is published by the Regional Environmental Center (REC) country office in Albania, in cooperation with Milieukontakt OOST Europa.

Twenty-seven jounalists, novelists, and internet writers from 17 countries have been awarded this year's Hellman/Hammett grants, recognizing those who have shown courage in the face of political persecution. The writers honored this year have been harassed, assaulted, indicted, jailed on trumped up charges, or tortured merely for providing information from nongovernmental sources.

The trial of two Internews employees charged with conspiracy in Uzbekistan began last week. While the U.S.-based NGO denies any wrong-doing, regional analysts say the case is politically motivated and that, with closed proceedings and the prosecutor's call for Internews to close their office, guilty verdicts are virtually assured.

The Global Resource Action Center for the Environment is spearheading a letter campaign to public television stations across the U.S. this week, registering their concern over the airing of "America's Heartland," a TV series funded by the multi-million dollar corporation, Monsanto, and several other big business groups. The series, they say, will not accurately portray the negative effects of industrial agribusiness on small family farms.

Our Media is a network of over 400 activists, media persons, researchers who work on strengthening the media and information/communication technologies (ICT's) that support social justice, human rights, community autonomy and grassroots empowerment. The last date for entries/proposals is August 31, for its international meet to be held in Bangalore on 5-9 December.
