Since the establishment of democracy in 2000, the media reforms in Serbia have been both slow and inconsistent. In order to expedite the approximation to requirements presented by the future EU membership, Serbia needs to give up on its arbitrary media policies and legislation and commit itself to implementation of adopted regulation.

Hundreds of journalists marched in the streets of Kathmandu calling for full press freedom in the country. Media personnel, rights activists and professionals joined a rally organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the establishment of FNJ.

Some 250,000 people tried to register for adult education classes in a single day following an episode of a Mexican television soap opera in which an older man broke down in tears when he could finally read his granddaughter's letters. TV and radio dramas not only get key messages across, but they're doing it cheaply and effectively.

Many believe that the recent mass rallies across the United States in support of immigrants' rights led a Senate committee to promote an immigration reform bill Monday that--in sharp contrast to a House bill passed in December--would put migrant workers on a path to citizenship. Hispanic media outlets paved the way for the impressive show of people power.

An international mission plans to visit Nepal to draw attention to the serious threat to press freedom and also the free expression violations that are continuing to occur in the country. The mission's aim is to support the country's media community and raise concerns with authorities over attacks on journalists.

The Lok Sabha committee probing a sting operation by the Indian electronic media against politicians has sought a blanket ban on sting operations by television channels. The report has blamed the media more than the guilty politicians and still the media has not taken up the issue forcefully.

A "new paradox of journalism" has emerged in which the number of news outlets continues to grow, yet the number of stories covered and the depth of many reports is decreasing, according to the State of the News Media 2006. The research was done by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a research institute affiliated with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Last Tuesday, March 14, the B.a.B.e. women human rights group presented the results of the EQVIWA media project the regional action for equal visibility. This is a two-year project that aims to initiate changes of social values and level the visibility of women in public and social space with the visibility given to men in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia and Montenegro.

Nearly two thirds of Macedonian citizens feel the need for a local television station. At the same time, they believe that the financing should come from the state, i.e. municipal budget. Over a half of the citizens are not prepared to secure funds from the family budget to finance local media, although 79 percent of them said they need local information.

Afghanistans new law on mass media was launched last week in Kabul by the Minister of Information Culture and Tourism, Said Makhtoum Raheen. The law reforms the country's existing press law and also guarantees freedom of expression in the country.
