Dans le cadre de la XXXVe Assemblée générale de lOrganisation des États américains (OEA), qui a commencé aujourdhui à Ft. Lauderdale, aux États-Unis, la Coalition internationale des organisations pour les droits humains dans les Amériques a adressé aux pays membres de lOEA une série de recommandations sur des questions prioritaires touchant les droits humains. Dans la déclaration quelle a émise, la Coalition a signalé que la faiblesse des institutions démocratiques ainsi que lexclusion et les inégalités sociales contribuent grandement à la fragilité de la démocratie dans les Amériques.

Ladoption de la Loi C-38, qui accorde le droit au mariage à tous les gays et lesbiennes du Canada, est une victoire pour les droits de la personne, selon le Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique (SCFP). « Cest une victoire pour les droits de la personne dans lensemble du Canada, un pas en avant pour les droits égaux des gays et des lesbiennes de tout le pays », affirme le président national du SCFP, Paul Moist, au sujet de ladoption hier du projet de loi C-38 par les députés du Parlement.

Tuesday's Senate passage of the Energy Bill made some progress in setting renewable energy targets, but overall has failed to take any meaningful action to move the U.S. away from its reliance on oil, say energy policy analysts Jeff Rickert and Brian Siu.

Since Sunday 19 the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) has been on general red alert with EZLN troops called into the mountains of Chiapas, and Zapatista communities advised to flee by their Juntas de Buen Gobierno (Governing Councils), amid fears that war in Chiapas is likely to resume. American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest youth suicide rates in the nation, and in some areas Native American young people are more than ten times as likely to commit suicide than their white counterparts. Many hope that the U.S. Senate's newfound attention to the issue will generate awareness and funding for prevention and education programs.

A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

Tehran mayor and president-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed Sunday to spread Iran's oil money to the poor, end corruption, return to the roots of the 1979 Islamic revolution, and push Iran's nuclear-energy plans. He's been called Iran's Robin Hood by some, but critics portend a Talibanesque regime now that hard-line conservatives hold power throughout the government.

African and international NGOs have issued a joint appeal to the UN and the African Union (AU) to put the crisis in Zimbabwe on the agenda of the upcoming AU Assembly, scheduled to take place in Libya July 4-5. Since last month, Zimbabwe's government has engaged in the ruthless destruction of homes and businesses in the capital, Harare, that has left at least 200,000 without shelter.

The PATRIOT Act became law a month after 9/11, giving the government sweeping surveillance powers and largely disregarding many civil liberties previously taken for granted. Repeatedly challenged as unconstitutional, several provisions are set to expire this year, but Congress may reauthorize and even expand the PATRIOT Act.

A Senate Republican report calls on President Bush to reassess financial support for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), alleging the funds are used to lobby against U.S. interests. ICRC's president said the senators simply want to discredit the organization after the Red Cross exposed widespread prisoner abuse.
