India’s ‘Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi, has influenced many movements for freedom and civil rights across the world and inspired leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. His birth anniversary will now be observed each year as the International Day of Non-Violence. The UN hopes Gandhi’s unique means of non-violent action will promote “a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.”

The climate change accord reached by the G8 countries at the German resort town of Heiligendamm has brought forth mixed reactions. Even as the G8’s initiative in engaging the five emerging economies – Brazil, China, India, South Africa and Mexico – over the issue has been welcomed, many feel that the rich nations are still evading their historical responsibilities.

There have been a series of targeted attacks perpetrated against Papernas in recent times. Although a number of complaints have been filed against the perpetrators, there has been inadequate police investigations and action taken on these cases.

After it announced its action “Placate Your Hero”, the BIRO Movement received a number of threats from members of various neo-Nazi organizations. Fearing the united neo-Nazis and nationalist may direct their aggression towards BIRO activists, the movement decided to conduct its action a day earlier.

The city of Zadar, under the auspices of cooperation within NATOÂ’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) and Croatian National Bureau for Protection and Rescue, hosted the 'IDASSA 007', May 21-24. Under the auspices of the project, a variety of catastrophic events and disasters were simulated, such as earthquakes, fires and terrorist attacks.

Uruguayan Vice President Rodolfo Nin Novoa inaugurated a meeting of Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP), a worldwide coalition of civil society organisations lobbying governments to eradicate poverty, with a call to the campaign to help bring down poverty and a promise to halve Uruguayan poverty levels by 2015.
