25.04.2005 Africa Malaria Day's major celebration will take place Monday in the capital of Zambia, where recent projects have provided millions of children with insecticide-treated bednets to protect against the disease. Impressive projects have raised the intensity of the fight against malaria across the continent, says Unicef, refuting an editorial from the Lancet medical journal that the World Health Organizations' campaign against malaria has been ineffective.

Marla Ruzicka, Killed in Iraq April 16
20.04.2005 On April 16, 28-year-old Marla Ruzicka of California was killed when a car bomb exploded on the streets of Baghdad. Marla, a long time activist, had worked with refugees in Palestine, campesinos in Nicaragua, and AIDS victims in Zimbabwe. She was in Baghdad working for the humanitarian organization she founded, the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC), which documents cases of innocent civilians hurt by war.

An All-Nighter for Trade Justice
19.04.2005 Some 10 million people in over 70 countries were expected to take part in the Global Week of Action for Trade Justice last Monday through Friday. One of the largest and most star-studded events took place in London, as 25,000 people stayed up all night to call for fair trade, not free trade.

During Education Action Week, Care USA urges you to contact your representatives in Washington; ask them to double U.S. support for basic education in 2006--from $400 million to $800 million--they say.

Zelfand and Crispi on the trail
14.04.2005 Erica Zelfand grew up in Massachusetts and always wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail--a 2,000 mile footpath that hugs the ridge of the Appalachian mountain range, one of North AmericaÂ’s major landforms. Together with Timothy Crespi, Zelfand decided to conquer her dream and make the trip more than just symbolic by hiking to raise awareness and funds for effective anti-hunger programs.
