43 million against poverty
31.10.2007 The Stand Up, Speak Out campaign by the Millennium Campaign and the Global Call to Action against Poverty, along with its partners have led to an incredible number of 43.7 million people – both physically and intentionally – standing up against poverty and in support of the Millennium Development Goals. The campaign’s success reveals a growing movement of people who want more urgent political responses to the growing crisis of global poverty.

22.10.2007 Dr Pam Rajput, eminent women rights activist and organizer cum jurist of the recent WomenÂ’s Tribunal on Poverty has hopes that the issue of Indian womenÂ’s engagement with poverty will not end with the tribunal. OneWorld South Asia met her prior to the event to discuss the role of women in ending poverty. Dr Rajput is also Director of the Centre for Women's Studies and Development (CWSD) at Punjab University.

Lost childhood
11.10.2007 October 10 marks one year since the Child Labour Act banned children from working as domestic servants. Yet millions of children continue to work in domestic and hazardous occupations and are vulnerable to abuse. Save The Children has called for concerted campaigns to save these lost childhoods.

10.10.2007 Handloom weavers in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh are battling poverty and tuberculosis while the government sponsored schemes still elude them. The Asian Human Rights Commission has launched an appeal to the people to urge the government to take action.

10.10.2007 Over 3,000 labourers signed on a monster banner to remind the Pakistan government of its promises to eradicate poverty and other MDG goals. The 10 km banner, patched together from smaller bits of cloth, will carry 1.5 million signatures to be unfurled in Bahawalpur on October 17.

04.10.2007 Water activists from different parts of India gathered at Rajghat, New Delhi, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2.
