Starting January 26, the day when the country was declared a republic, they will march through various states bringing people on the ground together.

Chitamma, an old and frail woman in eastern IndiaÂ’s coastal state of Orissa is the driving force behind Samudram, a state level federation of organisations of women fish workers. She has helped them become economically independent and has fought social evils such as alcoholism.

Human Rights advocates are urging consumers and merchants to shun Burmese gems at the military government's latest auction of precious stones. Human Rights Watch has attacked the gem trade for propping up the military dictatorship and it is felt that western boycotts could significantly hamper the juntaÂ’s profits.

A peopleÂ’s cycle rally over 60 days, will build public opinion on issues of concern affecting Dalits and other marginalised sections of society in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Organised by the National Conference of Dalit Organisations, the rally was recently flagged off from Rewa district on January 10.

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was honoured by the Millennium Campaign for its key participation at last yearÂ’s Stand Up and Speak Out initiative on October 17. The state witnessed a record turnout of more than half a million people in support of the campaignÂ’s cause.
