International non-governmental organisations in Pakistan have come under considerable pressure after an attack on a UK-based Plan International office in Mansehra near Islamabad, in which four people had died. In recent years, threats have been directed against NGOs and their staff, particularly women.

A dozen auto rickshaws or e-Tuktuks equipped with laptops, printers, telephones, recorders, and the Internet roam the villages in remote Sri Lanka, combining the services of a traditional telecenter and radio station. So ingenious was the concept that it won the Stockhom Challenge GKP Award in Kuala Lumpur last December.

A new report Why Girls Count says governments and multilateral agencies in developing countries must invest in the welfare of girls for better social and economic outcomes; countries that do not do so risk perpetuating poverty.
