30.11.2004 The Bush Administration is quick to celebrate pro-democracy protestors in Ukraine, while it shows no respect for them at home, says Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel. But the Ukrainian situation is about more than a rigged election; it's become a power struggle that could damage fragile relations between Russia and its historical foe, the U.S.

It is not clear whether Ukraine's reins of power will be passed to opposition candidate Vicktor Yuschenko, despite Tuesday's "swearing-in." But while over 100,000 citizens have gathered in Kiev's Independence Square to protest what is widely being considered a rigged presidential election, Amnesty International reminded Ukrainian authorities that they must not react with a heavy hand to demonstrators' peaceful assembly.

22.11.2004 Actions speak louder than words. As White House counsel, Alberto Gonzales approved of torturing detainees. He called for military tribunals and even opposed giving defendants a presumption of innocence. When advising on death penalty cases, he repeatedly omitted arguments for sparing lives. He's not the person to restore the rule of law to the U.S. Justice Department, says Georgetown Law Professor David Cole.

17.11.2004 Andhra Pradesh is in the midst of an agrarian emergency. The tragic farmers’ suicides are, finally, an extreme symptom of a much deeper rural distress. The result of a decade-long onslaught on the livelihoods of millions. The crisis now goes way beyond the families ravaged by the suicides. And beyond the farming community itself. There is an urgent need to end the suicides. But doing so without addressing the larger distress is to try and mop the floor dry with the taps open.

13.11.2004 Electronic voting technology holds great promise for making elections fairer and accessible to all, says computer security expert Bruch Schneier, but not in the way that technology has been implemented in the U.S. so far. If elections are to have any integrity, voting machines must leave a voter-verifiable paper trail and the software that runs them must be open to public scrutiny, he explains.

12.11.2004 WASHINGTON, DC, November 12, 2004 (ENS) - The morning after the election, Earthjustice staff gathered to face the news that the most anti-environmental administration will be back for four more years. As we have proved in the past, no matter how tough the challenge, Earthjustice's team of attorneys, policy analysts and media experts is up for the task.
