En avril 1994, l'ensemble de la communauté internationale avait les yeux rivés sur les premières élections multiraciales de l'histoire de l'Afrique du Sud. Deux défis attendaient Nelson Mandela et son nouveau gouvernement : en plus d'avoir à garantir une réconciliation nationale essentielle, il devait rapidement s'attaquer à restructurer un système économique où la richesse des Blancs n'avait été « gagnée » que par l'exclusion et l'exploitation directe des travailleurs africains, métis et asiatiques. The National Firearms Association believes that the Governments proposed draft-Law on Possession of Firearms should be revoked from the Parliamentary procedure, because it was prepared in an non-transparent procedure and does not correspond to the European Legislation in the field.

The Inkatha Freedom Party will contest the results of the election after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) failed to investigate 42 complaints of violence and intimidation lodged by the party, and declared the poll free and fair. The party claims that irregularities occurred in both national and provincial elections, but mainly in its stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal.

European Commission Office in Albania and the OSCE Presence in Albania announced that, as a part of the general operation of monitoring the compliance with the obligations Albania accepted with the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement(SAA), it will engage in monitoring of electoral processes in Albania. Before any actual activities, the European Commission and the OSCE will await for the formal request to be submitted by the Albanian Parliament and Government.

Thabo Mbeki's African National Congress (ANC) has won the national and provincial elections by scooping more than 69 % of the April 14, vote. The Democratic Alliance (DA) is second with just over 12% and the Inkhata Freedom Party (IFP) third with almost 7%. The ANC's performance is better this year compared to their 1999 victory of 66.35%.
