Around 170,000 small arms are being used by former military personnel and criminal gangs to commit grave human rights abuses as the country prepares for elections, Amnesty International said in a new report issued today.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jul 28 (OneWorld) - Civil rights activists are demanding that the federal government reauthorize the 1965 Voting Rights Act, saying voters' most fundamental democratic right would be routinely denied if the law is allowed to lapse.

With general elections scheduled for October, the interim Government of Haiti and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today wrapped up a two-day workshop bringing together all political factions and civil society to discuss the environment, the budget and anti-poverty strategies, with a view to making a peaceful transition, the UN mission said.

Many fear the current draft of Iraq's constitution would set back the once-powerful women's movement in the country by 50 years or more, subordinating women's human rights guarantees to subjective interpretations of Islam under Sharia law. Furthermore, says MADRE Associate Director Yifat Susskind, varying religious interpretations of the law could increase tensions among groups, further endangering Iraqis and undermining democracy.

Since former president of Haiti, Jean Bertrand Aristide, was ousted from power last year, people in pro-Aristide neighborhoods in the capital, Port-au-Prince, have faced extreme repression at the hands of Haitian police. U.S.-based human rights and trade union activists say they have evidence proving that U.N. military forces carried out a "massacre" in Cite Soleil on Jul. 6, and would like the U.N. to investigate.
