Faced with impossible conditions for holding elections, a proposal by the U.N. and the African Union has allowed Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo to stay in office for up to 12 months, despite opposition from some citizens. The country continues in a state of "no war, no peace," as it has since a failed insurgency three years ago.

India has been under a global scanner for over a year because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic which international agencies and Indian non governmental organisations (NGOs) say is growing phenomenally though the Indian government has denied it. The controversy has ballooned to include accusations that the HIV/AIDS problem is being unduly magnified to attract international funds. The irony lies in the fact that Indian organisations are sparring even as the infection soars in the country.

More that a year passed since the term in office of Dragoljub Mirjanic expired, and Banja Luka University still hasnt elected a new Chancellor. The optimistic expectations shared by the Chairman of the University Council, Jovo Stojcic, and the representatives of the Students Organization that a new Chancellor would be elected by the start of October and the new academic year, did not materialize.

The Azim Premji Foundation held a meet - National Learning Conference on Autonomous and Accountable Teacher for Quality Education - in the south Indian city of Bangalore. The conference discussed the role of the teacher in the present education scenario.
