The Indian elephant is in danger as the numbers of young breeding tuskers fall to a mere 1,200. Coordinated efforts on part of enforcement agencies and better border management can contribute towards fighting poachers and organized crime, says B K Sharma, head of the State Crime Branch of Orissa and leading expert on the illegal wildlife trade.

Human rights body Amnesty International has expressed concern at the recent political violence and displacement of hundreds of local inhabitants in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. The governmentsÂ’s decision to set up an industrial chemical hub in Nandigram had sparked protests from local communities fearing loss of livelihoods.

Religious fundamentalism and its impact on women was much debated at the recent Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights being held at Hyderabad, India. Acts of violence ranging from honour killings to marital rape have been borne by women in times of both war and peace.
