NEW YORK, May 31 (OneWorld) - U.S. President George W. Bush signed into law Congress' plan for continued war funding last Friday -- and with it, an attached proposal to raise the federal minimum wage from its current level of $5.15 to $7.25 per hour in 2009.

During last weekÂ’s debate in the Sabor (Croatian Parliament) on the report submitted by Gender Equality Ombudsperson, Karmela Caparin, an MP from the ruling HDZ (Croatian Democratic Community), said that there is more discrimination in labour and employment now, compared to previous years. In her view, the main cause for such regression is the insufficient public visibility of the work done by the Ombudsperson. The Croatian Women Network reacted strongly to that statement, but also to the debate in general.

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz will resign on June 30. Critics see his removal as a reluctant damage control exercise by the bank. WolfowitzÂ’s recent drive toward good governance has been panned as a PR scheme to restore credibility after years of support to corrupt regimes and unsuccessful neo-liberal policies.

Indian Supreme Court lawyer Rakesh Shukla cites the case of mental cruelty in a married life in the context of a recent judgement of the apex court, which clarifies the concept of ‘mental cruelty’ in matrimonial law. At the same time he expresses doubt of its feasibility in a country like India where there is much gender inequality.

The Narodna Skupstina (PeopleÂ’s Parliament) of the Republic of Srpska adopted, on October 24, 2000, the Law on Labour (Official Journal of RS, No. 38, November 8, 2000). What attracted attention were the provisions on workersÂ’ council in Articles 109-111. The Law provides that all employees with more than 15 full-time employees, the workers can establish their own council to represent themselves and protect their rights.

Albanian judges, prosecutors and police officers took part in seminars in the last two weeks on assisting victims of domestic violence. They were organized by the OSCE Presence in Albania, the Council of Europe and the Albanian School of Magistrates, and focused on the Law on Domestic Violence, which will enter into force in June.

The Pakistan Human Rights Watch, in a letter, alleged that the government had consistently muzzled the media in Balochistan, tribal areas and "Pakistan administered Kashmir", and urged President Musharraf to take corrective action.
