All the congregants of Colombian Pastor Adelina Zuñíga's church are displaced victims of war. Driven from their homes, they set up a new church on a garbage dump, cleaned up dirty areas of the city to establish community gardens, and are now helping other victims of war. They brought their stories to the living rooms and the halls of Congress of the United States recently.

During his recent trip to Latin America, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld expressed grave concerns over Venezuela's plan to purchase 100,000 AK-47s, especially considering the country's porous border with Colombia, which has been engaged in a brutal guerilla war for 40 years. Some think Rumsfeld's comments are just sour grapes, as the rifles are being bought from Russia instead of the U.S.

An impending water crisis in the arable lands of NW India and NE Pakistan is leading to disputes over rivers in Kashmir. The river Chenab is at the centre of the argument. It feeds much of the Pakistani Punjab and Sindh regions, but its headwaters are in Indian Kashmir, where the Indian government has designs on its hydro-electric potential.

The suffering of women in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one reason why the international community should pay more attention to the conflict. Rape and violence against women have become part of the culture of all sides in the war.

In order to return home and protect themselves from attacks, Colombians are trying to establish neutral "peace settlements," vowing not to interact with any of the myriad armed groups in the country. Their commitment to peaceful living has cost them both economic and physical security, say refugee advocates, calling on the Colombian government and United Nations to bolster the support network for these courageous communities.

It is in the forest where we often finds poor, isolated populations who are either ignored or mistreated and may need little encouragement to take up arms, therefore sustainable use of the worlds forests can create employment and generate income and can also help avert the emergence of conflicts, Food and Agriculture Organization said in the 2005 edition of The State of the Worlds Forests.

At least 16 children were brutally slaughtered on Monday in a Kenyan town in the arid Mandera district when one rival Somali clan attacked another. Although the Somali factions have long feuded over water rights, UNICEF reports that children seemed to be the target of this latest assault, which was carried out at dawn while the children slept and the men were out guarding the livestock.

While the U.S. government has assisted investigations into cases of U.S. citizens killed by Palestinian armed groups, it has failed to do so in cases involving Israeli forces, said Amnesty International Wednesday on the second anniversary of the death of Rachel Corrie, a U.S. peace activist crushed by a bulldozer while trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home.

The anti-Vietnam War movement did not rest during the election campaign of 1968. It targeted both major parties, forcing a sitting president to give up hope of re-election and pressing his successor to announce a withdrawl plan. The current antiwar movement largely gave John Kerry a pass in 2004 and now faces the daunting challenge of regaining its lost momentum, says former presidential hopeful Ralph Nader.

Fighting and famine have been a large part of the lives of the South Sudanese, but differences are being channeled into healthy competition during a regional sporting competition and festival. "There is less fighting between the tribes and people are learning to resolve their differences without resorting to guns and violence" as a result of the event, said one local organizer.
