12.08.2005 A Nepalese human rights group, Insec, says that eversince King Gyanendra took over direct rule of Nepal on 1 February, at least 1,115 people have been killed. The report says 738 have died at the hands of the state and 377, including both civilians and security personnel, have been killed by Maoist rebels.

Citizens of Tambogrande, Peru, Demonstrating Against Proposed Gold Mine
10.08.2005 The latest conflict between farmers and mining companies in Peru has resulted in one death, 20 injuries, and 37 detentions. The violence could be averted if communities, corporations, and the government all engage in good-faith dialogue and respect the rights of all parties involved, says Oxfam.
