For more than nine years a conflict has raged in Nepal between government security forces and fighters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). The conflict has had a devastating effect on all sections of Nepali societybut especially on the lives of children. The most fundamental rights of children are being violated routinely, and nowhere is this more apparent than in schools across the country.

A Nepalese human rights group, Insec, says that eversince King Gyanendra took over direct rule of Nepal on 1 February, at least 1,115 people have been killed. The report says 738 have died at the hands of the state and 377, including both civilians and security personnel, have been killed by Maoist rebels.
