The Janjaweed, a militia group allegedly allied to the Sudanese government, must be disarmed if peace is to return to the country's Darfur region, the U.N.'s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide said Monday.

Over 1,500 have been arrested in Nepal's capital over the last two weeks as political parties and their student supporters hold their most sustained protests since King Gyanendra's February takeover of the country's political machinery. In rural areas, a unilateral ceasefire called by Maoist rebels earlier this month has improved life, villagers say, wishing the government would follow suit.

Before his death in August, Sudan's first Vice President John Garang issued an ultimatum that come November, Northern Uganda's rebels operating out of southern Sudan would face military action if they failed to disband. With Garang out of the picture, the rebels continue to be active, killing 17 in one recent attack.

In a further escalation of the conflict in western Sudan, rebels of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army have seized the previously government-controlled town of Shareya, northeast of Nyala, capital of South Darfur State, aid workers reported.
