Charkha Development Communication Network has announced that it will award the best articles that bring to light community efforts to rebuild lives following the 8th October earthquake in Kashmir. This initiative is under the Sanjoy Ghose Humanitarian Award for Story Writing 2005-06 and is only applicable to residents from the state.

The military situation in the Temporary Security Zone separating Ethiopia and Eritrea remains tense and potentially volatile, according to a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission there, which has been forced to relocate some staff because of Eritrean demands.

The Humanitarian Law Centre (HLC) warns of the increasing pressure on the Council of the Special Department of the Belgrade District Court that hears the Djindjic assassination trial. Most pressure is put on presiding Judge Marko Kljajevic, which coincides with the announced completion of the presentation of evidence.

Liberia's national electoral commission dismissed George Weah's fraud case, and international mediators convinced the popular footballer-cum-presidential candidate not to appeal the decision to Liberia's Supreme Court. Weah said the decision was based on his desire "to see the Liberian people achieve durable and genuine peace."

The draft Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Bill, 2005 is likely to be submitted to the Cabinet for approval within this week before it is tabled at the next Jatiya Sangsad session. The draft bill was sent to the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs for vetting last week.

Newest Nobel Laureate Mohamed ElBaradei asks us to imagine a world free from nuclear weapons, where as much is spent on development as on war, and where a child's death in Darfur affects each and every one of us just as a child's death in Vancouver would. It may sound hopelessly idealistic...until you hear his very plausible strategy to launch us onto the path of peace.

Sonja Biserko, President of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, estimates that the sentences for the war crimes committed in Ovcara, near Vukovar, were adequate, having in mind that the maximum sentence at that period of time was 20 year in prison.

Last Tuesday, December 6, the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development officially launched the Together in the Fight Against Domestic Violence campaign. The campaign will be implemented by the end of 2005, and is a part of the Police Community Work project.

Join thousands around the world who have signed this petition asking for the release of four members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), taken hostage in Iraq on November 26. CPT sends witnesses to conflict areas in the name of peace--its members have been in Iraq since 2002 and were among the first to document abuses in the Abu Ghraib prison.

A key rebel leader has announced that his group, the Lord's Resistance Army, is ready to negotiate a settlement to the 20-year civil war that has ravaged northern Uganda, and that he and other leaders will cooperate with the International Criminal Court.

Yesterday, November 30, the EU announced the start of a nationwide campaign to support youth activities and promote tolerance in Macedonia under the banner together for youth. The EU will provide 900,000 over the next 18 months for the project, which is managed by the European Agency for Reconstruction.
