Sri Lankan organisation Sarvodaya is holding a meditation for peace initiative on October 2, 2006 - Mahatma Gandhi's birthday - at the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Sarvodaya expects to host one million people from all over the world - the largest gathering in Sri Lankas history - clad in white clothes to meditate for peace.

The UN has appointed Ian Martin as the new envoy to Nepal to spearhead efforts to promote peace in the troubled Himalayan country. The envoy has previously served on several occasions as special envoy to Timor-Leste.

A tall lanky youth rounds a bend in a mountain path and sees a group, stripped of their packs, resting in the shade of a tree near a small waterfall. He approaches, says hello and shakes hands with those nearest and then stretches and even clambers up a small incline to clasp hands with everyone, rare behaviour in this remote hill region.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 7 (OneWorld) - Protesters took to the streets around the world this weekend to oppose Israel's attacks on Lebanon and call for an immediate ceasefire. Demonstrations took place in London, Brussels, Cape Town, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Sarajevo, and across Indonesia.
