SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 19 (OneWorld) - According to the human rights organization Oxfam, U.S. and Ethiopian air strikes in Somalia last week killed 70 nomadic herdsmen who had no connection to any international terrorist group, including al-Qaeda, which the Pentagon said was the target of its attacks.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 8 (OneWorld) - An international delegation arrived in Cuba this week to call for the closure of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay. The protest is part of the January 11 International Day to Shut Down Guantanamo, during which many groups in the United States and abroad are expected to rally thousands of human rights activists.

La legge Finanziaria 2007 è positiva per lindustria militare: tra l'altro è stato costituito nel Ministero della Difesa un apposito Fondo per le esigenze di investimento per la difesa con uno stanziamento di 1.700 milioni di euro per il 2007 e per un totale di 4.450 milioni nel triennio 2007-2009. "Il Governo Prodi ha ceduto alla lobby delle armi ed ha autorizzato un rilevante programma di investimenti mostrandosi poco sensibile alle richieste di parte del suo elettorato che ha chiesto un drastico taglio delle spese militari per dirottarle verso quelle sociali" - commenta Nigrizia. E il ministro della Difesa Parisi ammette che i nuovi aerei caccia-multi ruolo F35 (JSF) sono in grado di portare testate nucleari, anche se ha notato "non significa che le porteranno". L'Italia partecipa al programma degli F35 e ha in progetto di acquistare 131 caccia per una spesa totale da 20 a 30 miliardi di euro.

Kansainvälisen Journalistiliiton (IFJ) mukaan mennyt vuosi oli maailman viestinnän ammattilaisten kannalta hyvin surullinen. Vuoden aikana suurempi määrä toimittajia ja muita tiedotusvälineille työskenteleviä kohtasi väkivaltaisen kuoleman kuin koskaan aikaisemmin. Vähintään 155 alan ammattilaisen kohtaloksi koitui murha, salamurha tai selittämätön kuolema.
