On an average, more than 400 infants below the age of one die in Bihar on any given day. According to Unicef, nearly two-thirds of infant deaths occur during the first month of the childs life. Timely intervention could help save these lives, thus reducing the states abysmal infant mortality rate, reveals a survey conducted by the UN childrens aid body.

Radio experts and communicators working on community radio have urged the World Congress on Communication for Development (WCCD) to give community radio its rightful place as a development tool in the communications debate. Radio specialists are dismayed that the global meet has overlooked the vital role of community radio in empowering people and strengthening democracy in many regions, including, conflict places. The Ministry of Education has taken steps to set up teacher villages (Guru Gammane) in 25 selected areas in the country next year, as a solution to the teacher shortage in schools in areas with less infrastructure facilities. The Ministry has allocated a total of Rs. 125 million for the project, with each fully equipped village costing over five million rupees, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha told the media.

Negotiations over who will oversee the next elections in Bangladesh appear to have broken down, throwing the country into a political crisis. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Awami League have had a series of meetings to try to find a solution but now they appear to have ruled out a compromise.
