26.02.2008 ICT is an acronym that many people up to now are not familiar with. It is surprising to find out that some of the university students in Zambia are not familiar with the acronym. But on the other hand, when you talk of computers and cell phones even ordinary children will be able to tell what they are and their use. 21.02.2008 The Sinazongwe District Development Committee in Southern Zambia has opened up an advocacy centre for its community. The advocacy centre based at Malima will provide services to over two thousand people from the area and will be used to access various ICTs.

14.02.2008 Most advocacy initiatives and research projects do not undertake the challenge of new data collection to devise their own ICT indicators. However, for different advocacy moments, we still need statistical information from legitimate and recognised sources. This section briefly identifies the organisations that currently have significant stocks of ICT indicators available to the public for free or at a nominal cost. Whether the entity collecting data has the sufficient resources, legitimacy and mandate for such an undertaking are also important to consider. There is no shortage of ICT indicators sources, and there are also strong overlaps with measurement of other sectors that are being transformed by the use of ICT – economic, poverty and governance assessments, health, education, etc.

ICTs for development
14.02.2008 CEEWA-U has developed an ICT Project to bridge the information gap between information sources, institutions with information and the end users. The Project facilitates linkages with the women at the grass root level and assists in establishing the impact of government policies and programmes and how the use and application of ICTs create an avenue for bridging the information gap.

Under sea cable
14.02.2008 Telecom Egypt, the incumbent telecom operator in Egypt, and Alcatel-Lucent announced they have signed a USD125 million contract to deploy a new submarine cable network linking Sidi Kerir in Egypt to Marseille in France. Named TE North, the project will enable Telecom Egypt to expand international connectivity, providing diversity from existing cable routes. Additionally, the TE North submarine cable system will help Telecom Egypt enhance its network capacity to operate as a wholesale carrier to other operators and expand its service offering to businesses and consumers.
