29.01.2007 India, which amended its patent laws for TRIPS-compliance in 2005, introduced a clause to ensure that pharmaceuticals did not block the entry of low-cost generic drugs. A year ago this clause blocked NovartisÂ’ patent application for its anti-cancer drug Gleevec. Now, in a major case that will have a profound effect on the affordability of essential medicines in India, Novartis is challenging this unique Indian provision.

18.01.2007 Environmental, human rights and occupational health workers from 14 Asian countries attending the fifth Waste Not Asia (WNA) conference have called for adoption of Integrated Zero Waste Management instead of polluting technologies like incinerators. The conference also called upon the UN and affiliated bodies to condemn and end the promotion of incinerators and other materials destruction technologies.

15.01.2007 The CESI Association called met on January 11, 2007, to present its concern over the decision of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports to approve the use of the experimental curriculum in health education prepared by the GROZD Association, in ten schools in Croatia.
