Concerned over the massive industrialisation planned for Indian state Orissa, environmental campaigner Greenpeace is alarmed over an Indian steel major's move to set up a mega port in Dhamra in Orissa's coastal Bhardrak district, saying it would be an 'ecological destruction' in the state's coastal areas.

Delhi based NGO Toxics Link has urged the Indian government to phase out the usage of mercury in the country after the European Union Parliament banned mercury trade. India being the second largest user and importer of the heavy metal, at the same time time it has serious public health implications in the country.

WASHINGTON, Jun 21 (IPS) - Environmental campaigners are urging several heavyweight investment firms, including Credit Suisse, Barclays, Fortis Group and Merrill Lynch, to shoulder some responsibility for a catastrophic mud volcano on the Indonesian island of Java that resulted from a gas project the firms helped fund.

Wipro has answered Greenpeace's call to check hazardous material present in its laptops and desktops. It has also introduced a take-back and recycling policy that will help in cutting down India's e-waste. Customers can now avail of its service across 15 locations country-wide.

Melting ice and snow caps are leading to rising temperatures and sea levels. India will be severely affected, among other Asian countries, by reduced water availability for drinking and agriculture, hunger and forced migration.

On the World Environment Day, June 6, just prior to G8 talks on climate change, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has formed an advisory panel that comprises government ministers as well as climate experts and industry representatives to formulate the country's strategy on climate change and its fallout.

The wastepickers in Indian capital New Delhi organised a cycle rally on World Environment Day, 5 June, to protest against the Municipal Corporation of DelhiÂ’s (MCD) plans to privatize waste management. The wastepickers met the Mayor after the rally and sought her help in protecting their rights.

Rising seas and shrinking mangroves will make Bangladesh and India's eastern state of West Bengal vulnerable to tsunamis and cyclones and may force migration of people.
