Gordon Brown will launch a new project today to mobilise more than one million British workers in support of economic development and workers rights in Africa. The Africa Matters project is a joint initiative by Amicus, Britain's largest private sector union, and Action for Southern Africa, campaign group and successor to the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

Oxfam and the UKs largest independent coffee roaster, Matthew Algie, have announced plans to launch a chain of fair trade coffee shops, called Progreso, in partnership with coffee grower co-operatives.

One in three donations to UK charities are now tax-effective according to Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). However, many charities are still failing to reclaim tax on their donations and to address this. CAF is hosting two new workshops to help charities understand and exploit tax-effective giving.

The government is failing to promote the use of renewable biomass energy, the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution has said. Biomas energy has benefits for climate change as well as UK agriculture, forestry and the security of the UKs energy supply, the Commissions Tom Blundell said at the launch of the RCEPs report.
