India, which amended its patent laws for TRIPS-compliance in 2005, introduced a clause to ensure that pharmaceuticals did not block the entry of low-cost generic drugs. A year ago this clause blocked NovartisÂ’ patent application for its anti-cancer drug Gleevec. Now, in a major case that will have a profound effect on the affordability of essential medicines in India, Novartis is challenging this unique Indian provision.

Environmental, human rights and occupational health workers from 14 Asian countries attending the fifth Waste Not Asia (WNA) conference have called for adoption of Integrated Zero Waste Management instead of polluting technologies like incinerators. The conference also called upon the UN and affiliated bodies to condemn and end the promotion of incinerators and other materials destruction technologies.

The Legislative Parliament unanimously ratified the Interim Constitution, 2007 of Nepal tonight. Earlier in the day the House of Representatives (HoR) unanimously promulgated the draft of the Interim Constitution. All 185 Members of the Parliament (MPs), who were present at the last session of the HoR, voted for the Interim Constitution.

The CESI Association called met on January 11, 2007, to present its concern over the decision of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports to approve the use of the experimental curriculum in health education prepared by the GROZD Association, in ten schools in Croatia. The GROZD programme awaits the approval by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The WNA Meeting is a gathering of people from Asia who share a vision of building a Zero Waste society through sustainable consumption, clean production, Zero Waste and ecology-friendly approaches to managing discards. This time the meeting is being held at the south Indian city of Kovalam in Kerala between January 15 to 18, 2007.

An HIV/AIDS and drugs education programme for junior and high schools has been developed by the National AIDS Commision (KPA) in Bali Province, Indonesia. The programme, infusing two methods of intra and extra curricula activities, has been implemented in six out of nine cities/regencies.
