Some 65,000 HIV-positive Ugandans are now on anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment, achieving the government's 2005 target six months ahead of schedule. The government attributed the success to international support and promised that if more resources continued to come into the country, Uganda could triple the number of people accessing ARVs by the end of 2006.

A new UNAIDS report - ON THE FRONT LINE A review of policies and programmes to address AIDS among peacekeepers and uniformed services - encourages stronger international cooperation to develop long-term strategies for HIV prevention, testing and counseling, and HIV treatment for personnel deployed in international peacekeeping operations as well as national uniformed services.

O acordo do Ministério da Saúde com a Abbott, fabricante de um dos remédios que compõem o coquetel distribuÃdos para pacientes com AIDS, não agradou à Rede Brasileira pela Integração dos Povos. Em nota pública, a organização se disse frustrada com o acordo.

In response to the urgent need for action to reduce the growing numbers of HIV infections, UNAIDS has approved a new policy approach to intensify HIV prevention. This policy position paper outlines essential principles, policy and programmatic actions that are needed to get ahead of the HIV epidemic.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jul 3 (OneWorld) - Efforts to fight the ravages of African poverty and global warming have yielded heavy symbolism in the run up to next week's summit of leaders from the Group of Eight (G8) dominant countries. Activists and analysts alike questioned whether the leaders would come away from the talks with just that: symbolism.

Wednesday's report on the world's effort to provide AIDS treatment to all those in need shows the project to be a monumental success, said Stephen Lewis, Kofi Annan's straight-talking envoy for AIDS in Africa. While the goal of reaching three million people by the end of this year will not be met, Lewis believes the initiative "has unleashed an irreversible momentum for treatment."
