A senior United Nations official has accused US President George Bush of "doing damage to Africa" by cutting funding for condoms, a move which may jeopardise the successful fight against HIV and Aids in Uganda.

A organização não-governamental Rede de Amizade iniciou desde o último sábado, 27, o Projeto Amazonas da Noite, em Manaus – AM. O projeto trabalha com capacitação em prevenção às DST/Aids para profissionais do sexo na capital do Estado e foi inspirado em um projeto inicial da ONG, realizado em 2002, e chamado Protagonistas da Noite, que durou cerca de seis meses.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug 29 (OneWorld) - The Ugandan government said Monday it had condoms aplenty even as a top United Nations envoy and U.S.-based activists charged that a U.S. emphasis on promoting abstinence was jeopardizing the East African country's previously successful efforts to fight HIV/AIDS.

Uganda's anti-condom campaign coupled with the U.S. government shifting global AIDS funding from prevention to abstinence-only programs, are causing acute shortages of condoms in the country, and endangering Uganda's previously successful prevention efforts, says the Center for Health and Gender Equity.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called for an investigation after the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria suspended all its grants to Uganda due to "evidence of serious mismanagement" of funds.

When her husband contracted AIDS, Kenyan nurse Ruth Abwao Bandi saw his care neglected even by other health professionals. This negative experience turned Bandi into an advocate against stigma and she has formed support groups in her community to help people understand and respond proactively to the results of their HIV tests.

The risk for infection with HIV virus increases in cases where condoms are not used or if drug-users share needles. The success in the reduction of risk behaviour depends on the existence of well-defined behavioural skills. These skills may be technical, interpersonal and self-management skills.

A Washington-based NGO has brought a lawsuit against the U.S. Agency for International Development for requiring from them an anti-prostitution pledge in order to qualify for funding. DKT provides HIV/AIDS prevention services to sex workers worldwide, and say the policy undermines their work to stem the spread of AIDS and human trafficking.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will submit confidential test results and inspection reports of its generic AIDS drugs to the World Health Organization for approval, hoping to help accelerate the distribution of low-cost medications worldwide and meet the wishes of some African governments who refuse to import the U.S. drugs without WHO approval.

Like elsewhere in the world, the number of people infected HIV/AIDS is on the rise in Albania. Over the past several years, the number of women with HIV/AIDS is slightly larger with women that with men, report the International Organization for Migrations and the Institute of Public Health, the implementers of the “Inclusion of Albanian artists and sportsmen in campaign against HIV/AIDS” project.

O acordo firmado entre os governos de 11 paÃses latino-americanos e 26 companhias farmacêuticas permitirá a redução dos preços de anti-retrovirais entre 15% e 55%. Segundo o diretor do Programa Nacional DST e Aids do Ministério da Saúde, Pedro Chequer, os remédios reajustados estarão disponÃveis em 2006. As negociações foram definidas entre os dias 2 e 5 de agosto em Bueno Aires.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, is conducting a ten-week course - HIV/AIDS Counseling and Psychosocial Interventions – for people working in the field and those living with HIV/AIDS. The course begins on November 14, 2005 and ends on January 21, 2006. The last date for applications is August 30, 2005.
