Ylituotantoruoan lähettäminen teollisuusmaista kehitysmaihin on pääosin tehoton kehitysavun muoto, todetaan OECD:n tutkimuksessa. Rahallinen apu on lähes aina ruoka-apua tehokkaampaa, OECD:n tutkimuksessa todetaan. Ruoka-avun suurin viejä on Yhdysvallat.

Even after 57 years of independence, one has to dream of a ‘‘strong, capable and confident India’’ that is yet to come true. This requires, on one hand, people standing united at whatever level they work together, beyond caste-class and gender divisions, with a deep faith in human equity, commitment to national integrity and the required tolerance to attain and maintain unity. Medha Patkar, noted activist, shares her vision of an empowered India.

Tuoreen tutkimuksen mukaan vain kaksi prosenttia briteistä katsoo rahan antamisen hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöille olevan paras tapa vähentää köyhyyttä kehitysmaissa. World Emergency Relief -järjestön tutkimus kertoo, että britit eivät usko G8-kokouksen tulosten helpottavan kehitysmaiden ongelmia.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sep 22 (OneWorld) - Global shareholders in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are unlikely to agree this weekend on a debt deal for 18 of the world's poorest countries, the lending institutions' heads said Thursday as wealthy nations bickered over who would pay for the effort.

Rich nations are simultaneously telling poor countries to rein in their spending while throwing their support behind global anti-poverty goals--which require more spending by poor countries. Anti-spending policies appropriate decades ago are no longer what is needed, say a pair of new reports aimed at the World Bank and IMF meetings this week.

President Bush's U.N. speech shows he sees some benefit in working with other nations when it comes to fighting terrorism, seeking trade agreements, or preventing the spread of disease, says the U.N. Foundation's Johanna Mendelson Forman, but it's too early to say if this marks a turning point for the hitherto unilateralist Bush administration.

Afghanistan has had its first taste of real elections, but to build a legitimate state that is strong enough to survive and competent enough to deliver results, the U.S. and its allies must continue to give their political and economic support, says J.
