New figures have revealed that racial harassment has increased in schools in Glasgow for the seventh year in a row. Physical assaults increased from 18 to 29 between 2002 and 2003.

The Metropolitan Police is considering measures to fast-track cops from ethnic minorities to reflect and better represent Londons diverse racial communities. Race campaigners urge Met Commissioner Sir John Stevens not to be deterred by "reactionary forces" and to drive through these much needed changes.

Dissatisfaction among Black and Asian Liberal Democrats is on the increase as it has emerged that Charles Kennedys party have failed to select a single minority ethnic candidate in a safe or winnable seat. All 52 of the Liberal Democrats' sitting MPs are white, and prominent Black activists are said to be desperate for progress.

Discrimination against Gypsies and Travellers is the last "respectable" form of racism, says the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). The CRE launched its strategy to deal with such discrimination on 2 April, following two months of consultation with gypsies and travellers, community and public organisations and local authorities.
