A new student society has been formed at the LSE aiming to promote interest in development issues. The Development Society kicks off this week with a series of events analysing the Millennium Development Goals. Having made apartheid history, Nelson Mandela takes up the cudgels for the Make Poverty History campaign. On the eve of the G7 finance ministers' meeting in London, he will speak in Trafalgar Square at midday on Thursday February 3rd.

Equality Now marked its launch in London with an event to honour the work of Rana Husseini, the Jordanian journalist who broke the silence on honour killings. Speakers included Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda and Charles Wheeler. Anuradha Vittachi, Director of OneWorld UK and herself a writer on womens rights, reviews the event and the work of Equality Now.
