Biodiversity concerns are subsumed in the vague Millennium Development Goal (MDG) for environmental preservation whereas poverty issues have specific targets. There are worrying signs of squabbling amongst UN teams responsible for joining up strategies for separate MDGs.

The idea of a stamp duty on currency transactions is named after an economist, James Tobin, who suggested it 30 years ago. A tiny percentage of the vast sums exchanged in financial markets could bridge the funding gap for the Millennium Development Goals. This campaign is dedicated to the proposal and encourages you to write to Gordon Brown.

En septembre 2005, lors du Sommet du millénaire, cinq ans après des Nations Unies, à New York, les leaders mondiaux se réuniront afin d'évaluer les progrès réalisés pour atteindre les Objectifs du millénaire pour le développement (OMD) fixés en septembre 2000. Compte tenu de l'attention internationale qui sera portée au Sommet et la nécessité pour le Canada de s'affirmer comme un leader mondial en matière de protection des droits de la personne et d'aide internationale, Droits et Démocratie tient une conférence afin de mobiliser tous les acteurs en faveur d'une approche centrée sur les droits humains dans la mise en œuvre des OMD. C'est donc une invitation à venir échanger sur les défis que posent les OMD et à explorer avec nous les possibilités de concrétiser ceux-ci en plaçant les droits humains au cœur de la stratégie d'action mondiale.

New research suggests that the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to "halt and reverse" the spread of HIV/AIDS may be unhelpful when applied at national level. The very different contexts of prevalence and action in Africa and Asia call for more sensitive objectives.

Calls for debt relief to be awarded to African countries have become "de rigueur" in non-governmental circles and a good many news publications. But is it sufficiently important to crowd out sports talk amongst people riding mini-bus taxis on their way to work? That's exactly what 'Get on Board' is discovering at the moment. Under this initiative, a group of activists aboard a 14-seater bus is traveling around Africa, collecting the views of rural and urban populations on Africa's debt problem, international aid and trade rules.'Get on Board'
