Just days before the G8 summit, taking place next week in Scotland, international development organization, ActionAid has hit out at the developed nations for providing aid that serves their corporate interests, pushes privatization in recipient countries, funnels money to rich consultants and leaves the poor countries heavily indebted. Rahul Kumar reports from New Delhi.

In advance of the G8 summit, trade union leaders representing workers from 150 countries met with Tony Blair Wednesday, highlighting that fair and sustainable work worldwide is a critical element in the campaign to end poverty and calling on G8 leaders to take more decisive steps on poverty, environmental issues, and HIV/AIDS.

At a Beijing meeting last week, UN special advisor Jeffrey Sachs asked China to take the lead in the fight against malaria. By cultivating a shrub that produces an anti–malarial medicine, China could make major contributions to reduce global poverty and meet the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

In most African societies, children are supposed to be seen not heard. On Friday, June 24, at Eroet Primary School grounds, Soroti district, Eastern Uganda, things were different. Children talked their hearts out as adults in various ranks sat and listened, often uncomfortably.

Some of the world's most famous monuments--from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to a cotton tree planted by freed slaves in Sierra Leone--will be adorned with massive white cloths Friday as worldwide parties and demonstrations launch the first mass action in what many expect to be the largest anti-poverty campaign ever. Governments will be held to account for promises to end corruption and to take the economic steps necessary to end extreme poverty worldwide.

”We do not want decisions taken in small groups behind closed doors," said an NGO representative participating in last week's UN meetings to plan for September's UN World Summit on the Millennium Goals. Civil society organizations propose similar consultations be held with the NGO community before all major summits, as they have firsthand experience on the issues and governments would benefit from their expertise.

Asia's remarkable victories in its war on poverty have put the world, except for sub-Saharan Africa, on target to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen by 130 million worldwide since 1990, even with overall growth of more than 800 million in the developing regions since then, according to The Millennium Development Goals Report 2005.

In the past five years, Latin America and the Caribbean have continued to advance in the fight against hunger, to improve gender equity in education and access to drinking water, and to reduce infant mortality, but the region continues to lag behind in meeting some of the Millennium goals, such as halving extreme poverty, making primary education universal, and turning around the decline in the environment.

The new president of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, who returned back after a visit to four African countries, has said that the Bank will focus on development in Africa. The Bank's other priorities include supporting equal rights for women to help foster ecnomic growth.

Youth from around the globe are traveling to Scotland to take action on the most pressing issues facing young people today, firmly placing their opinions and recommendations in the hands of G8 leaders. Created by UNICEF, the first C8, or "children's summit," will blend together the voices of children from G8 countries as well as eight of the world's poorest nations.

Speaking recently as Chair of the African Union, President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria had plenty of advice for G8 leaders on aid, debt and trade issues. And he made a plea that the right to "decent work" should be included in the Millennium Development Goals.

The agreement on 100% debt relief for developing countries announced by finance ministers from the eight largest industrial nations on Saturday has been greeted with a huge sigh of relief by the 14 beneficiary governments in Africa.
