With the G8's renewed commitment to Africa, Refugees International President Kenneth H. Bacon argues former U.S. president Bill Clinton should be chosen as the world's leader in mobilizing support for the UN's anti-poverty goals. The goals, says Bacon, will fail unless headed by a leader who, like Clinton, can be both cheerleader and cajoler to rich and poor countries.

Today marks the beginning of the three-day G8 summit in Scotland. After months of hard work, the NetAid network has sent a clear and unified message to the world's most powerful leaders: we must do more to fight global poverty. The message came in the form of thousands of petitions you sent to President Bush, which joined the 300,000 letters collected at last week's Philadelphia Live8 concert. You also spoke through making thousands of cut-out 'buddies' to represent children who cannot go to school, which will be delivered to the G8 leaders to lobby for universal primary education.
