WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug 29 (OneWorld) - The Ugandan government said Monday it had condoms aplenty even as a top United Nations envoy and U.S.-based activists charged that a U.S. emphasis on promoting abstinence was jeopardizing the East African country's previously successful efforts to fight HIV/AIDS.

As world leaders gear up to review contributions to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the United Nations general assembly in September, activists in Bangladesh focus on the need to make the MDGs more responsive to gender equality. According to them, it is imperative that governments integrate the implementation of the Platform for Action (PFA), adopted at the U.N.'s 1995 Beijing women's conference, and the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) into efforts to achieve the MDGs.

Although globalization has raised women’s awareness of employment options and improved job opportunities – particularly in the service sector – lingering stereotypes and rigid gender roles can keep them from entering male-dominated sectors or accessing top managerial positions, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says in a new report.

Two objectives geared towards greater gender equality were creatively linked in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in Lahore on August 19, 2005. They believe that by promoting and encouraging sports among women and girl children, the objective of retaining more girls in schools where they receive quality education will be easier to meet.

The Global Health Council asks you to support replenishment of the Global Fund by signing the international appeal for increased and adequate funding by August 20.

In the flurry of activities before the UN Summit, the worldÂ’s printing presses have started rolling fervently, churning out report after report, and, expectedly, the focus is zeroing in on sub-Saharan Africa. The Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) says poverty and malnutrition in the southern half of Africa will worsen even as it improves in other poor areas of the world.
