OneWorld publishes Country Guides and Topic Guides as a core educational resource underpinning its online global development news and analysis. Country Guides cover over 70 developing countries, providing an introduction to human development issues and the underlying politics. Topic Guides address a range of key development themes relating directly or indirectly to the Millennium Development Goals, including Aid, Gender, Water and Sanitation, and Climate Change.
In illustrating how globalisation has created an interdependent world, OneWorld Guides draw attention to the scope for global citizenship to override the limitations of national politics, a fundamental component of development education.
With plenty of links to more detailed learning opportunities, OneWorld Guides provide an ideal entry point for development studies in general and developing countries in particular. For an example Guide, select any topic or country from the menu on the left of this page.
About OneWorld
OneWorld Guides are published by OneWorld UK on behalf of the OneWorld global network. They feature in the educational "In Depth" section of oneworld.net, one of the world's best-known sites for news and analysis of sustainable development and human rights issues. Oneworld.net was listed by Kofi Annan as one of his top ten websites.
Based in London, OneWorld UK is one of a network of 12 global centres, each a non-profit organisation pursuing a common mission to promote human rights and sustainable development through new technologies. More about One World UK.
Audience Profile
OneWorld Guides respond to the sharp increase in public concern for the problems faced by developing countries and for the links between globalisation and social and environmental injustice. An audience survey conducted in March and April 2009 revealed that, in the next 12 months:
- 30% are likely to consider applying either for a degree course located in a foreign university or for distance learning study conducted online
- 43% are likely to join a campaign to fight social or environmental injustice
- 28% are likely to volunteer in a foreign country
The audience profile includes students upwards from age 16, media personnel, staff of NGOs and government agencies, and the general public increasingly worried about the impact of their personal lifestyles on poorer countries.
The Guides currently attract over 40,000 unique visitors per month, with an unusually long average visit time of over 3 minutes per page. The audience is growing month-by-month and we typically achieve over 300 click-throughs per month for our advertisers.
The geographical location of this audience is very diverse with no country contributing more than 15%-20%. Amongst a very wide range of locations, the leading contributors are India, Pakistan, US, Australia, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa and UK.
All figures quoted are verifiable with Google Analytics.
