"If you are a filmmaker concerned about whats going on in our world today, add your stories to OneWorldTV and join this radical network on the cutting edge of technology and social change." Mike Figgis, Film Director (Leaving Las Vegas, TimeCode)
OneWorldTV is a unique open documentary platform for filmmakers, video journalists, NGOs and just about anyone with a video camera or mobile phone and an interest in social issues. It gives you the opportunity to access video messages and short films from around the world.
Since the site was launched in June 2001, more than 6,000 people from 57 countries have registered as OneWorldTV members. Together our members help to create an online community for sharing experiences, opening debates and expanding the horizons of audio-visual communications.
At OneWorldTV we aim to show a rich mixture of video content across a wide range of social justice issues, like Human Rights, HIV/AIDS, Water and the Environment.
Our members and partners are constantly adding new films and video stories on these and many other subjects, giving you an opportunity to hear a range of different voices and perspectives. Try exploring the General section for a taste of the true diversity available.
Anyone can join the OneWorldTV community and begin uploading their own video footage, provided its relevant to the core themes of the site: human rights, sustainable development and the environment. Joining OneWorldTV is quick, easy and best of all free. We are particularly interested in providing a platform for films that challenge old ideas and offer new ones. We like to see films capable of provoking a response and sparking debate. We therefore encourage content from users with diverse views and those interested in looking at issues from different angles. For this reason you may find some controversial content or messages that you disagree with that is the nature of an open platform such as OneWorldTV where everyones voices can be heard.
At OneWorldTV, video-makers have a platform on OneWorldTV to air issues, share experiences and reach audiences beyond their own supporters, while video journalists have an outlet for their more hard-hitting reports. Documentary makers are able to promote their work and themselves, and partner organisations such as other media networks share best practices and increase their membership.
In addition to numerous films, the site features an extensive support section where you can find out everything you need to know about getting your video on the web, including advice on equipment; tips on filming, editing and compressing your clips. If that isnt enough, there is a complete guide to uploading. Theres also a news and events section to keep you up-to-date on the latest film festivals, competitions and industry news.
Since 2001 more and more opportunities exist for people to upload and stream their video. Videos are increasingly being put online not only by members of the public and NGOs, but also by mainstream broadcasters as well. IPTV is the way of the future. However sites like Youtube are becoming so packed with indifferent material that can be difficult to avoid information overload and find worthwhile videos on development themes. OneWorld TV is therefore introducing a new set features. Videos worthy of recommendation and available online anywhere on the net can be showcased on the OWTV site. This can be done either by the OWTV editors or by members of the community.
These videos can then be rated and commented on, so that the very best rise to the top of the rated list. Equally importantly, each video showcased in this way is put in a context of the background information and analysis from the rich resources of OneWorld.net and our 3,500 content partners.
Overall this means that OWTV is more than ever a one-stop-shop to find, watch and share the most significant videos available anywhere online on our theme of a fair and sustainable world.
OneWorldTV is currently funded by the MacArthur Foundation and has been funded in the past by the Rockefeller Foundation, DfID and Open Society Institute.
