The final phase of Burundi's peace process begins Friday with the start of a historic four-stage election process. Louis-Marie Nindorera from the group Global Rights was recently in Washington to shed some light on the current situation in the country recovering from genocide and 12 years of civil war.

Although details have not been worked out, Burundi's president and last remaining rebel group, Forces Nationales de Libération (FNL), agreed Sunday to immediately end hostilities and work for sustainable peace in the country. If negotiations succeed, the FNL would join six other rebel movements in the country's transitional government formed to end the civil war between the Tutsi and Hutu, which began in 1993.

The only remaining rebel group in Burundi said this week it would join the peace process ahead of elections scheduled for later this month. In the Congo, one militia group announced an end to its armed struggle while another sent the last of its conscripts to hand in their weapons. Meanwhile, Ivorians are waiting to see if their president will accept mediator Thabo Mbeki's ruling that the main opposition candidate should be allowed to stand in elections later this year.
