Algérie Télécom is the first African telecoms operator to put together a business strategy that includes Fibre-To-The-Home. Although the price of connecting households to fibre has dropped considerably elsewhere, it still remains an expensive way to provide a local connection. However, the prize it is seeking to create is a large user base for its forthcoming triple play offer.

Tomorrow Algeria appears before the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to defend its record. Amnesty says that the country does little to protect women from violence and discrimination.

La couverture de l'information algérienne par les médias étrangers est menacée par une nouvelle décision du ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, qui désormais refuse d'accréditer un même journaliste pour plusieurs médias étrangers. Un décret devrait être prochainement adopté pour entériner cette mesure.

Tandis que les ministres de l'Union européenne (UE) et la Commission européenne s'apprêtent à rencontrer le ministre algérien des affaires étrangères à Rome, lundi 3 novembre 2003, Amnesty International demande à la Présidence italienne de l'UE d'exiger que l'Algérie prouve qu'elle est disposée à honorer ses engagements inscrits dans l'accord d'association signé par l'UE et l'Algérie, que toutes les parties doivent bientôt ratifier.

Ainsi, le 5 avril dernier, le Ministre de l'immigration du Canada Denis Coderre a suspendu le moratoire sur le renvoi des ressortissantEs AlgérienNEs malgré les protestations des groupes de défense des droits. Cependant, le nouveau rapport d’Amnistie internationale confirme que la situation des droits humains en Algérie demeure très préoccupante.

The Algerian government has expressed alarm at the high rate of teachers leaving the profession in primary schools. Teacher attrition in Kampala's primary schools stands at 35 per cent. Most of these teachers just walk out of the profession and disappear without informing their superiors.

Uganda has been elected as one of Africa's representatives on the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council. The Council is the Union's supreme administrative organ and is responsible for policies that include spectrum regulation for telecom and Internet applications. Other African countries that have been elected are: South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Mali, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Cameroon.
