The new owner of Dalmacijacement from Split, the CEMEX international corporation, decided to lay off one hundred workers. The president of the United Trade Unions of Croatia, Ozren Matijasevic, said that the unions tried to fight for preservation of all jobs, but the ownership rejected their efforts.

The philanthropist George Soros is this years laureate of the prestigious Andrija Stampar Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Public Health. The award was presented at the 27th Annual Conference of ASPHER (Association of Schools of Public Health in The European Region), held in Erevan, Armenia.

The first International Forum of Environmental Journalists ended yesterday in Pozega. The three day forum was organized by the Croatian Environmental Press Centre, under the patronage of Ministry of Environmental Protection, Construction and Spatial Planning, discussed the subject of Importance of Environmental Journalism in Environmental protection and prevention of devastation.

The year 2002 has come back, it seems, and floods rampage all over Europe once again. The Mura has already flooded, the Drava is a serious threat, and the Sava flooded Slavonija and caused great damages both in human settlements and in newly sown fields.

The prosecution authorities in Osijek have started the investigation on the criminal charges brought up against the Chairman of the Military Housing Commission, who is accused of war crimes and crimes against the civilian population.
