Sandra Pernar, Deputy President of GONG association received the Council of Europe Award for its First Time Voter Project, yesterday in Strassbourg. First Time Voter is a project implemented by GONG for six years in a row, at Croatian secondary schools. Over 100,000 high-school students have participated in the projects.

The project for Danube River Protection (DRP), i.e. Capacity building for implementation of projects designed to reduce release of organic and toxic substances and cross-border cooperation of the Danube countries was started in 2001, on the initiative of the Global Environment Facility and UNDP, with the aim to improve the quality of the environment in the Danube Basin.

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) sent an open letter to the President and the Prime Minister of Croatia, the President of the European Commission and the leadership of the Croatian Radiotelevision at the beginning of this week, to express their concern over the events surrounding Croatian journalists at the end of 2005.

The Green Network (Zelena Mreza) of Karlovac District started the project for monitoring of the Eugen Kvaternik military training grounds in Slunj. The project attempts to reduce the negative impact of the military manoeuvres on nature and environment in Slunj area, which has been exposed to the effects of the military training for years.

The explanatory phase of the screening of chapter on free movement of goods of the negotiations for Croatian accession to the European Union started last Monday in Bruxelles. The European Commision will use this phase to explain to Croatia the legislative tradition in that area.

According to the Cro-Lesbians portal, the majority of negative experiences for the male homosexual community in Croatia are related to visits to psychologists, i.e. medical personal in public health institutions. These are the findings of the recent survey conducted by the Rijeka-based lesbian association Lori, in cooperation with Zenska Soba from Zagreb.

The representatives of environmental associations of Croatia, Italy and Slovenia, met yesterday (Sunday, January 15), in Njivice, on the island of Krk. The meeting discussed the topic of energy projects planned for this part of Europe.

According to Glas Slavonije (Osijek based daily), the documentary film on the war in Vukovar, produced by B92, was completed last week. The screenplay was written by Drago Hedl, editor with Feral Tribune magazine, and was directed by Janko Baljak, film director from Belgrade.

Nine Croatian NGOs started a movement against discarded packaging, in response to the disobedience of the retail chains and store that produce the waste, who refuse to apply the Rules and Regulations on Packaging adopted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
