Last week, the Novi List daily published and interview with Herman Haller, Director of Clinical Centre Rijeka. In the interview that discussed the introduction of a vaccine for cancer of the uterus, Dr. Haller said that the official introduction of this vaccine should be discussed at many levels, including a discussion with the (Catholic) Church.

Starting in 2000, the UN decision established the June 20 as the International Day of the Refugees. On the occasion of the International Day of the Refugees, the Serb Democratic Forum (SDF) and the Centre for Peace Studies (CMS) came out with a public warning about the discrimination and weak solutions for problems faced by returnees and asylum seekers in Croatia.

The manual Steps Towards Successful Local Youth Policies came out of print at the end of May 2006. The manual was prepared and written by Emina Buzinkic, Drazen Puljic and Tomislav Tomasevic, experienced trainers and members of the Board of the Croatian Youth Network.

From June 22 to June 25, 2006, Zagreb will host the first regional pride procession for rights of LGBT persons, Internacionala Pride 2006, Zagreb Live Free. The pride and the related events will last for four days, and the pride parade itself will be held on Saturday, June 24, on Zrinjeva. The parade starts at 10:30 hours.

The Governments Gender Equality Office finished, at the start of last week, the Draft-National Policy for Promotion of Gender Equality 2006-2010. The draft was submitted to the Working Group for preparation of the document, with a review deadline of three days only, while simultaneously being submitted to all administrative bodies and local commissions. This action provoked strong protests with all involved participants.

As reported by the media, the Members of the Sabor (Croatian parliament) from the national minorities could revoke their support fot he changes and amendments in the Criminal Code proposed by the Government, if hate-crimes are not included in the text of proposed amendments.

The DIM Association for Civic Education and Social Development opened a public competition for a part-time lecturer for the Youth in the Labour Market series of lectures, to be held in secondary schools in Zagreb, during the academic year 2006/2007. The lectures are part of the "Youth in the Labour Market Informal Education of Youth on Implementation and Protection of their Social Rights". The competition is open for applications until June 31, 2006.

The Zelena Akcija environmental NGO and its partners organized, last Friday, June 2, 2006, a symbolic rafting tour on the Dobra River, to warn the public about the dangers that the announced construction of Lesce hydro-electric power plant would present to the bio-diversity of the river and the long-term bad investment that this HEP (Croatian Energy Company) project is likely to turn into.

On the occasion of the International Environmental Protection Day, the Croatian Environmental Press Centre launched its website, at www.alertonline.org/press. The continuing activities of this NGO aim to strengthen environmental journalism, which has an important place in the process of increasing awareness and understanding of environmental problems in the public, as well as assist the journalists in finding sources of information on the environment.
