West African neighbors Benin and Nigeria agreed last week to unite efforts to prevent and suppress human trafficking, particularly of women and children. With cross-border trafficking into Nigeria rising, the countries further pledged to protect, rehabilitate, and return trafficking victims to their homes.

Le Bilan fait lors de la célébration de la troisième édition de la journée internationale contre le travail des enfants révèle en effet que le fléau résiste aux actions menées pour le combattre. Aussi bien au Bénin que dans le monde tout entier, l’enfant continue d’être soumis aux travaux des adultes hypothéquant ainsi son avenir, celui de son pays et de toute l’espèce humaine.

Local people interested in learning computers are turning up at the new community multimedia centre in a neighbourhood in Benin. The UNESCO-supported telecentre does not have its own community radio station yet but has linked up with a nearby FM station for an hourÂ’s broadcasting every day.

Rosine Mahinou, a mother of seven never thought she would send her girls to school. But that was five years ago. Today, Ms. Mahinou has enrolled all of her girls in school along with her boys. This sea change in her attitude is largely due to a programme promoting girls’ education called Education and Community, in her village in Benin.

Barely two weeks after 116 children were returned to neighbouring Benin, another set of 120 children kidnapped from that country have been rescued by the Nigerian police. The children were victims of child trafficking and forced child labour, according to the police.

The "ICT and Civil Society in Africa" reports were commissioned by APC to explore the role of local civil society organisations in developing and strengthening ICT policy-making at a national level in Africa.

Children who eat foods contaminated with aflatoxins, a toxic by-product that grows on crops, show stunted growth similar to malnutrition. Aflatoxins grow when crops are stored in hot and humid conditions.

While the problem of third world debt is seen as a key global problem the issue of 'Ecological Debt' is not recognised, despite it's importance for Southern countries fighting to stop environmental and social destruction, including problems caused by climate change. A conference being held in Benin at the end of November aims to readdress this balance.

Thousands of children as young as six-years-old are trafficked across borders to work in West Africa's wealthier countries as domestic servants, farms hands and market traders, says an anti-slavery group in the wake of revelations about the Benin "slave ship".

There was growing concern about the fate of a group of children held on a slave ship that has gone missing off the west coast of Africa. The vessel was reportedly transporting the children from Benin to work on plantations in Gabon but was turned away from two ports when its cargo was discovered.
