A new report by the UN says that India has enough food to feed its population of one billion though hunger and food insecurity have increased since the mid-1990s.

Stockholm: Ruth Manorama a Dalit herself, 'for her commitment over Dalit women's causes, has bagged the 2006 Right Livelihood Award, better known as Alternate Nobel Prize, it was announced by Akob von Uexkull, the founder of the awards, during a ceremony at the Swedish Foreign Ministry's press room on Thursday.

An Indian activist has alleged that Indian enforcement agencies are not being able to stem the disappearances of millions of children all over the country. He fears that missing children are being pushed into begging or forced work.

Findings of a study, conducted by Karunalaya, a voluntary organisation involved in an awareness programme along with the Chennai Corporation has revealed that about 80 per cent of families in north Chennai have, at least, one member affected by chikungunya.

The Group of Ministers (GoM), which has been assigned the task of ironing out differences within the Union Cabinet on amendments to the community radio regime, has cleared the changes proposed by the Union Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry. This includes the contentious issue of allowing advertisements on such radio stations.

Reacting to the Kerala High Court's decision to set aside the ban imposed on production and sale of Coca- Cola and Pepsi in the state of Kerala, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said that it was very unfortunate. "The government has still not notified the safety norms and without these, the drinks remain as unsafe as before," said Sunita Narain, director, CSE.
