Employment opportunities for slum women have increased in Bangladesh making them financially secure as well get a place in a male-dominated society. Researchers from Proshika Manobik Unnayan Kendra in Bangladesh, the London School of Health and Tropical Medicine, and the University of Bath in the UK try and find out if urban employment has made a difference to the lives of slum women.

Sex workers at a rally yesterday placed an 11-point demand to resolve their various problems. These include stopping forced eviction from brothels, arrangement of alternative income and ensuring healthcare end education. Another demand was to raise the issue of trafficking at different forums and create awareness about their human rights.

Bangladesh's foreign aid dipped 40 percent in the first six months of the current fiscal year due to slow implementation of project aid. The government received total $ 488 million in foreign aid during July-December of FY06 against $815 million in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.
