The report 'Strategy for Sustained Growth' says that Bangladesh could join the ranks of middle income countries by 2016. It has the necessary assets, much-improved economic fundamentals, rapidly growing labor force, an established entrepreneurial culture and an impressive record of achievement in harnessing sound economic and social policies to pioneering social entrepreneurship.

Bangladesh's caretaker government ordered withdrawal of the army camp from Dhaka University campus by today and a judicial enquiry into two days of violence in which over 250 people, mostly students, were injured.

Weeks of heavy rain flooded over 30 percent of the country and left hundreds of homeless in Bangladesh, which is experiencing some of the worst flooding in recent years and terribly affecting day to day life. The estimation shows around 10 percent of the countryÂ’s 80,000 primary schools had been affected due to floods.

The devastation caused by monsoon flooding in Bangladesh affected more than 9 million people in 39 districts. Emergency supplies are being provided to hardhit areas by UNICEF, the World Food Programme and non-governmental organizations.

A prominent international development group has warned that time and money are running out for relief operations in south Asia, where floods have affected 30 million people according to the World Health Organisation, and up to 50 million according to some officials.

A leading children's charity is appealing for at least £2 million for its emergency response to floods in South Asia which have put at risk at least 10 million children in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

On a series of Sanglap (Dialogue), a ground-breaking discussion programme in Bangladesh, the BBC World Service Trust has launched the third programme in the series in the run up to the general elections in Bangladesh. Elections will take place towards the end of 2008 and the BBC programme gives the people an opportunity to engage in a direct dialogue with their political leaders.
