There are more than hundreds of male sex workers (MSWs) operate in Lahore. Although the precise number of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Lahore is unknown, according to the Pakistan National AIDS Programme, they number around 38,000. Under the country's Islamic laws, such behaviour is strictly illegal and the result is that levels of awareness about the risk of HIV infection among male sex workers is extremely low.

Reporters Without Borders voiced dismay today about the silence with which the Pakistani authorities, including information minister Mohammad Ali Durrani, have greeted the findings of the two reports they have received about the kidnapping and murder of Hayatullah Khan, a journalist based in North Waziristan who worked for the Urdu-language daily Ausaf and the European Press Photo Agency (EPA).

Unsafe syringe use among drug addicts in Pakistan and a lack of awareness about the risks of HIV/AIDS makes them especially vulnerable to infection.According to official figures, there are around 500,000 drug addicts in Pakistan, of whom around 60,000 inject drugs.

The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) will soon set up an ayurveda treatment centre in Pakistan, in collaboration with the Karachi based Mehrunnisa Welfare Trust. If realised, this venture will be the first recognised Ayurveda hospital in Pakistan.

International experts have assessed that Pakistan could become a polio-free country as early as the end of 2006 having decreased the number of polio cases from 30,000 in 1994 to just 13 this year by successfully implementing the Polio Eradication Programme.

Floods and torrential rain have caused public sanitation in Karachi to deteriorate to a point where health experts are not sure whether its 12 million inhabitants are going to be hit by malaria first or by gastroenteritis conditions are rife for both, as well as a host of other pestilences.

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) has awarded this yearÂ’s international press freedom award to Hayatullah Khan of Pakistan along with other journalists. An exception was made to honour Khan who had been abducted in December 2005 and whose body was found in June 2006.
