Day of the Disappeared
31.08.2007 August 30 marks the International Day of the Disappeared; it an annual commemoration to draw attention for those who have been subjected to forced disappearances. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has shown concern for the rising number of missing people in the country.

29.08.2007 Pakistan's Supreme Court has demanded the government to explain its decision to send troops into the controversial Red Mosque in Islamabad last month where more than 100 people were killed when security forces stormed the mosque to flush out Islamic militants.

27.08.2007 According to the UN ChildrenÂ’s Agency (UNICEF), the rains and cyclone in Pakistan have displaced more than 377,000 people. Tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are now living in makeshift shelters, or in tents provided by the aid agencies.

A time to heal in the sub-continent
22.08.2007 India and Pakistan agreed to allow cross-border cargo truck services, aimed at boosting trade. The agreement, which came after a meeting between the officials of the two countries, will help to improve transport of goods and led to the restoration of diplomatic, sporting and transportation links.

The speakers stated that the dismal state of governance in Pakistan was largely due to the lack of freedom of information and stressed on the timely access to reliable and authentic information for good governance.

17.08.2007 The Government of Pakistan has allocated an amount of Rs 6.237 billion for the development of rural areas of the country. The government has adopted a comprehensive policy for rural development, including agriculture, social and physical infrastructure as well as rural industrialization under its annual plan for the year 2007-2008.
