A new service launched by the Romanian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will enable self-employed and family businesses to register and carry out other procedures online. According to a report released Friday by the Council of Europe, U.S. officials secretly operated illegal prisons in Poland and Romania where "techniques tantamount to torture" were employed against those considered terrorism suspects.

The General Consul of the Romanian Embassy in Belgrade, Julijan German, said for Dnevnik daily that, starting on July 1, Rumania will introduce a unilateral visa regime for all citizens of Serbia and Montenegro. German said that the visa regime is a result of a failure to achieve bilateral agreement between the two countries.

Un recente rapporto UNICEF denuncia lo sfruttamento del lavoro minorile in Romania: una vera e propria piaga che coinvolge 1 milione di ragazzini e ragazzine di 12-13 anni obbligati a lavorare per 3 euro al giorno. Secondo lo studio di UNICEF, lÂ’8% dei bambini costretti a lavorare afferma di essere picchiati se non obbediscono alle richieste dei genitori - riporta Osservatorio sui Balcani.

Four telecentres became operational in remote areas of Romania as part of the Dot-GOV project. These centres will offer a range of services to the village communities, from facilitating communication in emergency situations to tap the potential of e-commerce.

A damning judgement from the European Court of Human Rights has put judicial reform back under the spotlight. Bucharest has been ordered to pay 46,000 euro in compensation to an imprisoned lawyer who suffered “inhuman and degrading treatment” at the hands of the authorities.

Eleven countries from Southern Europe are currently participating in a project on ICTs for the development of education and the construction of a knowledge society. The project, which got underway earlier this year, includes activities like seminars and expert meetings on topics such as ICT application in distance education, IT training and multimedia courses.

Environmental groups want the plug pulled on Canadian financing for Romania's Cernavoda-2 CANDU nuclear reactor. In a report released today, they allege that a secretive planning process has not adequately addressed accident risks or radioactive waste disposal. Export Development Canada is expected to provide a loan of $426-million towards the $650-million cost of completing the partially-built 700-megawatt CANDU reactor.
